..Origins of knitting
Knitting is a technique of producing fabric from a strand of yarn or wool. Unlike weaving, knitting does not require a loom or other large equipment, making it a valuable technique for nomadic and non-agrarian peoples.
The oldest knitted artifacts are socks from Egypt, dating from the 11th century.[2] They are a very fine gauge, done with complex colourwork and some have a short row heel, which necessitates the purl stitch. These complexities suggest that knitting is even older than the archeological record can prove.[3]
Earlier pieces having a knitted or crocheted appearance have been shown to be made with other techniques, such as Nålebinding, a technique of making fabric by creating multiple loops with a single needle and thread, much like sewing.[4] Some artefacts have a structure so similar to knitting, for example, 3rd-5th century CE Romano-Egyptian toe-socks, that it is thought the "Coptic stitch" of nalbinding is the forerunner to knitting.
Most histories of knitting place its origin somewhere in the Middle East, and from there it spread to Europe by Mediterranean trade routes and later to the Americas with European colonisation.[5].

Arm knitting typically uses yarn in a size of 6 or "extra bulky". Knitters can decide the number of skeins they want to use based on desired thickness and length. Scissors are the only other tool than the knitter's arms. Normal crafts that can be made with arm knitting are blankets, scarves, infinity scarves, and cowls. Tutorials claim that the knitter can create a scarf in thirty minutes, though it can be around an hour depending on the length and width of the scarf.[3]
First the knitter must cast on to their arm with a slipknot and a tail. The number of stitches that are cast on determine the width of the scarf, blanket, or cowl.[4]
After the desired number of stitches the knitting begins. The stitches are switched between both arms. This process continues until the craft is at the desired length.
Stopping the knitting is a process known as binding off. To bind off the knitter will knit two stitches and then move the stitch closest to the body over the stitch further from the body. This process continues until all the stitches are bound off.
Once the project has been bound off it can be sewn together to make an infinity scarf, or for blankets it can be left as is. It is also possible to create fringes on the ends of the scarf instead of making it into an infinity scarf..

*So what is the big deal about dipping the wick and how in the world do you do such a thing? At Hadwin House we are 100% obsessed with creating the perfect candle and are equally obsessed with candle care education. If you've purchased candles recently in our store, you may have gotten a card showing best candle care methods because we are dedicated to your best candle experience. Who knew candles needed care? Years ago when I lived in Florida, and before I was a candle maker, I was introduced to candle care by another reputable candle line and was blown away at what I learned. Seeing as how we use the finest, cleanest ingredients we can to make a clean-burning and amazing candle, why not give a little care to the investment so you can enjoy it a little longer. Let me explain. The wick dipper is a long stem with an angled end that allows you to dip the wick into the melt pool to extinguish the flame. Why would one do that??? The reason is 2-fold. For one, the flame is put out immediately and as opposed to blowing out or snuffing out, it fully extinguishes the flame which eliminates smoke and soot, and that icky smell afterward. Secondly, it re-coats your wick in the wax which will add hours to your candle. BE SURE TO STAND YOUR WICK BACK UPRIGHT. As you get to the bottom of the jar, dipping may present a challenge so at that point I recommend just blowing it out. Also, it is very important to trim your wick to 1/4 in before lighting. NEVER leave a candle unattended and avoid burning longer than 4 hours. (that goes for ANY candle company). I have added videos on social media about how to best care for your candles. So there you have it, that is why we use the wick dipper thingy and we love it. Easy and Yummy Hard Tack Candy
Growing up, we made old-fashioned hard tack candy.
My two favorite flavors were cinnamon and wintergreen. Mmmm, mmmm good!
Easy Hard Tack Candy
- 1 cup water
- 2 cups sugar
- 2/3 cup corn syrup
- 1 teaspoon flavoring oil
- food coloring
Put the water, sugar, and corn syrup into a heavy sauce pan. Bring to a boil stirring occasionally.
When it comes to a full rolling boil, turn the heat down to medium high. You do not need to stir the it while it is cooking.
Boil until it reaches 295-310 degrees Fahrenheit on a candy thermometer. (Hard crack stage.)
Remove from heat. Add 3-4 drops food coloring. Stir till the color is well-mixed in.
Add the flavoring oil. Stir.
Pour into a pan lined with tin foil. Let cool for several minutes.
Use a butter knife to score lines into the candy.
When the it has cooled, remove it from pan. Pull off the foil and use the handle of the butter knife to tap to to break into small pieces. (this is the easier way)
This is the fun way...We used to roll it into long pretzel rod shape, and cut off the pieces with scissors.
If so desired, place in a baggy with some powdered sugar. Shake to coat candy pieces. This will keep the candy from sticking together.
From start to finish, this takes only about 30 minutes to make.
One word about the flavoring. Make sure it is an oil flavoring. If you use the extract flavoring, the flavor won’t be very strong. (I guess that is okay — if you like anemic-flavored candy.)
A word of caution. Do not breath in the steam that rises up after putting in your flavoring oil. Do. Not. It will burn your nasal passages! Don’t ask me how I know that.

Ten Reasons Why I Love Being Outdoors
Many people who live in cities lose their appreciation for nature. However, they may still appreciate the thought of being outdoors in pleasant weather, perhaps for a hike on a sunny day or to relax on a sunny beach. Of course, there is a lot more to nature than just pleasant sunny afternoons. Nature has a way of surprising a person, and variations in climate/weather are probably the most obvious surprises that you can experience while outdoors.
Here are ten reasons why a tree planter might appreciate being outdoors:
1) Fresh Air: Certainly there are places where the outside air is characterized by pollution and wouldn’t be regarded as fresh and clean, but the majority of the time, if you’re outdoors, the air is better than stale air found in buildings.
2) Sunshine: Humans get about ninety percent of their vitamin D simply from exposure to sunshine.
3) Scenery: What a person perceives as beautiful scenery can vary, depending on where you live, but there are very few people who don’t see the beauty of working as a tree planter in the Canadian outdoors.
4) Health: Generally, if you’re outdoors, you’re getting some sort of exercise which is good for your body.
5) Animals: A lot of people look forward to animal encounters, as long as you’re safe. If you’re a tree planter, it isn’t uncommon for you to see deer, moose, elk, bears, wolves, coyotes, rabbits, foxes, wild cats, and dozens of smaller species of animals and birds.
6) Plants: Many people like gardening. If you spend a lot of time walking around outdoors, you’ll probably learn to recognize dozens or hundreds of different types of plant, flowers, and bushes.
7) Smell: Nature often smells great!
8) Stress Relief: If you’re worried about problems or events in your busy life, going outdoors can provide the mental break that you need to eliminate stress and give you a new perspective on your problems.
9) Improve Your Vision: This is debatable, but several studies have suggested that people who spend a lot of time outdoors are likely to have better long-distance vision than people who sit inside at a desk all day. It seems to make sense.
10) Astronomy: Just because it is night-time doesn’t mean that you need to stop enjoying the outdoors. If you’re outside on a clear night, you’ll have an opportunity to see star-lit skies that are almost impossible to ever see when you’re living in a city.
